Learn about butterflies and contribute to a Biodiversity Survey Citizen Science project with ace Lepidopterist and author Craig Marks. Join LMN-NE’s 2026 Butterfly Workshop and North American Butterfly Association (NABA) count with expert instruction at Black Bayou Lake National Wildlife Refuge Conservation Learning Center, Monroe, Louisiana!
Join the class room portion on the evening of September 4th at the Conservation Learning Center, BBLNWR and the surveying project on September 5th starting from the Visitors’ Center!
Friday, 4:00–7:00 p.m. at the Conservation Learning Center:
1. Intro to insects: It’s a large Class; meet some unusual butterfly relatives.
2. Butterfly metamorphosis and identification.
3. North American Butterfly Association + the how and why of counting.
Saturday, 9:00 a.m.:
Convene at the Visitors’ Center (not the Conservation Learning Center) to form teams for counting. This venue has water fountain, toilets and cool air.
Please be aware, the Count Leader must know who is counting and where, so please convene at the visitors’ center before you begin counting. We will form several teams for covering the refuge.
We will count until approximately 2:30 or 3 p.m., stopping for a lunch break. However, those doing the count as field work for the certification workshop are not required to count past noon. For those who are already certified, participating in an official account counts as volunteer hours.
Our count leader, Craig Marks, must pay to record our results—which include our names and volunteer hours—with NABA. Therefore, each participant in the count owes him $3 before participating in the count.
3 p.m.: Conclusion w announcements (if any).
This elective workshop can contribute to your certification! It is No. 5 of Cycle 5 in a series of workshops for those who wish to become certified master naturalists.
